Slap on the wrist? More like barely a poke….

Haisong Jiang, 28

Well, unless you live under a rock, you know that one of the main terminals at Newark Airport was shut down last week because some idiot decided to skip the security line so he could “be romantic and see his gf off properly,” according to his friends.  The guard who was supposed to be watching the place where he went through had been called over to investigate something else, and off went the man to his gf.  A passenger notified the guards, who shut down the terminal for hours and cancelled dozens of flights, which caused many delays worldwide.  The man was arrested on Friday, and what do you think his punishment will be?  I was thinking a couple years in jail–or at least on probation–and a hefty fine.  Not so.  He faces a misdemeanor charge of trespassing and a $500 fine.  That’s it.  Why is that it?  Because apparently in this nation which should be, and usually seems to be, paranoid about air safety since 9/11/01, there aren’t actually any felony-level laws against doing what this man did…….

What makes this even better is that the friends of the suspect defend him and say that he’s “a very good person who didn’t realize the ramifications of his actions.”  Are you kidding me?  Yes, I know he’s Chinese and not American, but he lives here and has flown several times, and it takes about zero common sense to know that when every other person who goes past the security checkpoint has to have a ticket and go through a screening process, then it is not okay for you to just skip the line.  I mean, the guy studies molecular bioscience, you’d think he’d be able to understand basic logic!

Oh come on! I’d do it too, it’s the airports fault for improper security. What if he had really been a threat? What would the airports excuse be that the gate was left unguarded and what was the guard thinking leaving his post unattended?!?!
