What’s the big deal?

I couldn’t believe when I read this article about how 1 in 5 people don’t plan to fill out the census this year, because they’re a) too busy, b) not interested, c) distrust the government and have concerns about privacy, or d) think the forms would be used to find illegal immigrants.

Okay, a) It’s 10 questions.  Hardly a GMAT; b) Who cares?  You’re probably ‘not interested’ in doing your taxes either–especially if you owe–but you do them anyway because it’s the law, as is returning the census; c) unless you’re an illegal, the government already knows your SS#, b-day, and pretty much anything else anyone could ever hope to know about you…..so thinking that filling out the census is what’s going to compromise your security is silly and naive; and d) If only.  Unfortunately, the census bureau doesn’t work with ICE.

The people most likely to boycott the census are lower-income, less-educated minorities–Hispanics especially.  I honestly can’t see what the big deal is.  The census is something that has happened every 10 years since 1790.  It’s hardly new.  If the government wanted to use it to single out or ‘destroy’ people, they would have started long ago.  Some people are boycotting because of political reasons, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.  This count is used to reallocate House seats.  If lower-income minorities don’t fill it out, they have no right to bitch about being under-represented, because it’s their own fault! Common sense people, common sense!
